COURSE STRUCTURE

You will be based in school for 38 weeks where you begin structured class observation and attend lectures. The course focuses on practical classroom management and you will have a phased introduction to small group teaching, part-lesson teaching and then full lesson teaching.  This is all under the direct supervision of your mentor.
You will also have the opportunity for:

  • A six week placement in a contrasting secondary school

  • A primary experience during the first or second term consisting of 5/6 afternoon or morning sessions

  • A short Sixth Form placement

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

The principle underlying this course is the development of practical experience.  The aim of the school based placement is that it should be progressive, giving trainees scope for reflection and time to develop a range of appropriate teaching styles and strategies.

Teaching experience is interwoven with the General Professional Studies and Subject Application and Assessment sessions enabling theory and practice to be fully integrated, offering trainees opportunities to develop their own understandings, skills and knowledge. The subject mentor, working with trainee, is crucial to the development of reflective practitioners, providing them with opportunities to try out particular skills in a safe environment, planning lessons and evaluating performance.

GENERAL PROFESSIONAL STUDIES (GPS)
This is a core element of the course and it is important that from the beginning of your professional development you are able to view educational matters from a range of perspectives.   Sessions will cover topics looking at the education system, legal and professional responsibilities of teachers as well as reflecting on wider key educational issues. This element of the course will enable you to place the pedagogy of your subject within the wider context of educational provision and practice in society. These lectures take place at Challney High School for Boys and Community College on Monday mornings.           Read more >

SUBJECT APPLICATION AND ASSESSMENT (SAA)
Subject Application and Assessment courses will equip you with the knowledge of the National Curriculum in your subject area and develop those competences required to teach your subject to the 11-16 age range. You will develop skills associated with: presentation and communication of your subject; implementation of the National Curriculum; planning individual lessons and series of lessons; organisation and management of groups of pupils; assessing, recording and reporting of pupils' progress and attainment; to teach pupils of all abilities.  These sessions take place at various schools within our consortium.
